Diaphragm-Arousing Powder a.k.a. Open Up the Diaphragm Powder (qi ge san)

Pattern: Esophageal Constriction due to Congestion of Qi and phlegm

This is dysphagia-occlusion. Chronic Qi constrains leads to clumping of Qi such that the body fluids are not longer dispersed throughout the body but collect and transform into phlegm.

Chief: Sha shen (Radix Glehniae/Adenophorae) and Chuan bei mu (Bulbus Fritillariae cirrhosae). The former clears heat and enriches without being drying. Together these herbs effectively open the Qi dynamic of the upper burner when it has become clogged by phlegm.

Deputy: Yu jin (Radix Curcumae), which facilitates the movement of Qi to open up constraint while also dispelling blood stasis to disperse clumping, and Sha ren (Fructus Amomi), which move the Qi to promote the Qi dynamic of the middle burner and harmonizes the Stomach to  stop vomiting and retching.

Assistant: Fu ling (Poria), leaches out dampness and transform phlegm. Dan shen (Radix Salviae miltirrhizae) invigorates the Blood. eliminates stasis, and assists the dispersion of clumping the has penetrated to the blood aspect. He ye di (Calyx Nelumbinis) directs the Yang upward and strengthens the Spleen's transportive and transformative functions to dispel dampness and harmonize the Stomach. Chou tou kang (Testa Oryzae) opens the Stomach, directs Qi downward, and is a specific herb for the treatment of occlusion.
