Gan Cao - Licorice root (Radix Glycyrrhizae)

Properties: Neutral or Warm, Sweet . all 12 channels, especially Heart, Lung, Spleen, Stomach

Action and indication: Tonifies Qi: fatigue, SOB, palpitations due to Qi and bl deficiency (Zhi Gan Cao Tang)      

Moistens Lung: coughing, wheezing

Fire toxin: sore throat, sores    

Spasms and pain: abdominal or legs (Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang)

Harmonizes other herbs     (many formulas)             

Antidotes toxic substances

Contraindicated: excess dampness, nausea, vomiting. Long-term use can cause hi BP, edema, hypothyroid.  Incompatible with  Gan sui, Da ji, Yuan hua, Hai zao; antagonizes Yuanzhi.            

Honey-fry: tonify Qi, stop spasm.

Raw: relieve toxicity.

Dose: 3-6 g
