Asthma

Pattern: Accumulation of phlegm heat in the Lung.

Key symptoms: Loud husky voice, wheezing and coughing with thick yellow phlegm, fever, perspiration, thirst with preference for cool drinks, constipation and dark urine, yellow slimy coating and rapid slippery pulse.

Formula: Sang Bai Pi tang (Mulberry Bark Decoction)

Treatment method: Clear the Lung, transform phlegm and calm wheezing.

Acupuncture: Lung-5 chi ce, UB13, fei shu ST40 feng long, Large Intestine-4 he gu, Ren22 tian tu, M-BW-1b ding chuan.

Formula Ingredients: Sang bai pi tang: Sang bai pi (Cortex Mori), Ban xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), zi su zi, Xing ren (Semen Armeniacae), Zhe bei mu (Bulbus Fritillariae thunbergii), Huang qin (Radix Scutellariae), Huang lian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Shan zhi zi (Fructus Gardeniae).

Modifications: For fever, add Shi gao (Gypsum fibrosum), Zhi mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae)

For copious thick sticky phlegm, hai ge ke, Jie geng (Radix Platycodi)

For thirst and dry throat, add Tian hua fen (Radix Trichosanthis)

For wheezing with an inability to lie flat, copious phlegm and constipation, add Ting li zi (Semen Descurainiae seu Lepidii), Da huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma),  Mang xiao (Mirabalitum)For phlegm is rust-colored and accompanied by pain in the chest, add yu xing cao, dong gua zi, Tao ren (Semen Persicae), Gua lou (Fructus Trichosanthis), yu jin, bai mao gen
